The archive in its' beautiful hometown Herzogenaurach is full of sneaker classics from the past decades but to' this day adidas continues to inspire designers for collaborations and features. Performance or lifestyle, adidas is always setting new standards.
adidas - How it all started...
Back in the 1920's the Dassler brothers Adi and Rudolf started producing sports shoes in the laundry room of their parents house in a small town in Bavaria called Herzogenaurach, where adidas still sits to this day. Their shoes were used mostly for track and field or football, where Adi took on the part of production and development, while his brother Rudolf was in charge of sales and distribution. They celebrated their first success in 1936 when Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the Olympic games wearing Dassler shoes. Back then unfortunately there were some differences between the brothers, causing them to go separate ways after the second world war. In 1949 Adi Dassler founded the company adidas, one year after his brother started the brand Puma. Shortly after, the world famous three stripes were placed on adidas' shoes and after the so called "Miracle of Bern" in 1954, adidas made a real name for themselves. They made use of many sponsorships to promote their brand internationally, whether at the Olympic games or football world cups.
adidas Originals - adidas sneakers that wrote history
The adidas Originals department has been around longer than many of you may think. Their signature trademark is the Trefoil, which exists since 1972 and has gained international recognition. Many legendary models like the Gazelle or the Superstar from the archives have been reworked since the 90s. In the 2000s a wave of retros were released, which really helped the recognition and appreciation for Originals. Besides sneakers, there was also apparel that really leaned on old patterns and styles but went far past the ordinary adidas joggers. Not only were there the original classics like the adidas Firebird jacket, but there were other new developments that clearly had the adidas DNA in them. Originals really stands for young fashion from adidas, including all the accessories wanted for those who appreciate street style. Classics such as the Stan Smith or the ZX series are key parts of adidas Originals. New models such as the Super Court or the EQT Gazelle were all inspired by shoes from the famous adidas archive.
adidas Performance - The best or nothing
It is well known that the roots of adidas in sports run deeply. The founder, Adi Dassler himself was a passionate sports advocate whose ambition was to provide the best equipment for athletes in order to achieve their best possible performance. The "Miracle of Bern" and countless gold medals at the Olympic games are proof that adidas really knows what it's doing when it comes to sporting goods and performance sneakers.
New Technologies - From adidas Boost to Futurecraft
adidas was always ahead of the game when it comes to innovations. The brand has a number of patents and doesn’t stop working on new technologies. After releasing Boost adidas went further with 4D, an advancement of 3D printing, which comes into play in the production of the soles. With adidas’ speed factory they are capable of quickly producing upper materials such as primeknit. The Futurecraft Loop is a performance shoe that can be recycled entirely. adidas are pioneers when it comes to the importance of sustainability. The collaborations with Parley are especially noteworthy, because adidas produces shoes that are made of plastic waste that has been recovered from the oceans. Since then millions of pairs have been sold.
Collaborations - adidas and stars from the music industry
When it comes to collaborations the brand with the three stripes is a frontrunner. Back in the 80s, they had their first contract with the music industry with RUN DMC and many more were to follow. Beyonce and her label Ivy Park, Kanye West and his Yeezy collection or Pharell Williams with Human Made are only a few of the names that have collaborated with adidas for extravagant collections. Besides musicians and actors adidas has also worked with other very successful and popular brands such as Noah or Pleasures and with adidas Consortium they opened up a branch for limited releases together with other sneaker shops around the world.
