Their joint label Y-3 has revolutionized the industry and created a new category in fashion.
Y-3 - fashion meets sport
Yamamoto's eponymous label had been in business for more than 30 years and his enthusiasm for fashion was waning, so he started looking for alternatives. First he contacted Nike, but they told him that they only wanted to produce sportswear... For his winter collection 00/01 he wanted to borrow some sneakers with the 3 stripes from adidas, but everything turned out differently. adidas is a very popular brand in Japan and this fact was not lost on Yamamoto. The collaboration of the two caused a medium earthquake in the fashion industry, because there had never been anything like it before. The adidas Y-3 label was the first to combine athletic apparel with high-end fashion, giving Yamamoto his second spring.
Y-3 - More than fashion sneakers
Y-3's collections undoubtedly bear the signature of Yohji Yamamoto. His signature color palette of black, white and navy blue gave adidas sportswear a new glow. In addition to the clothing, Yohji also took on the adidas sneakers and designed the classic silhouettes according to his own ideas. He always uses existing adidas models as the basis for this, which are modified with his Japanese design idea and have definitely earned the term fashion sneaker. Technology such as adidas Boost or 4D can also be discovered in the Yamamoto shoes and harmonize perfectly with the design aesthetic of adidas Y-3.
