However, the company's history dates back to 1952, when shoemaker Nathan Swartz acquired shares in the Abington Shoe Company. After immigrating to the United States, he worked his way up the ranks after completing his apprenticeship and took full ownership of the company in 1955. In the 1960s, production began for waterproof footwear and in 1973, a waterproof boot was added to the line under the name Timberland. This model was so successful that the company was renamed The Timberland Company in 1978.
The boot named Timberland was sturdy, well-made and waterproof. It not only enjoyed great popularity among hikers and mountaineers, craftsmen also knew how to like the properties of the boots. The legendary "yellow" boots were born. In addition to boots, Timberland also offers leather moccasins and boat shoes, and since the 1980s it has also had its own clothing line.
Once again, a commodity became a fashion accessory. Especially parts of the hip-hop culture adapted the boot for their clothing. They liked to keep the lacing very loose and show off the boots' large tongues. The rapper and producer Timbaland even owes his stage name to the boots. The legendary Wu-Tang Clan is also often associated with the Timberland boots. According to legend, Timberland brand shoes appealed to New York pushers who needed sturdy and waterproof shoes for their "work" on the streets. Other stars such as Beyoncé or Jennifer Lopez wore Timberland boots in their music videos.
The brand got worldwide attention mainly through its collaborations. Billionaire Boys Club, Off-White, Supreme, Stüssy or even Tommy Hilfiger scented their own versions of the legendary Timberland boots in recent years.
