The New Balance 2002 made its debut in 2010 and initially had a different sole, which also offered outstanding cushioning. The New Balance factories in Boston and the surrounding area produced the NB 2002 using nubuck, mesh, and a full-length N-Ergy sole, which was the same as its sister model, the New Balance 1906. Production in the USA is more cost-intensive, so the New Balance 2002 R also had a premium price, which not many people wanted to pay. So, the NB 2002 disappeared from the shelves almost as quickly. In the late 2010s, the trend towards dad sneakers developed and New Balance sneakers emerged as the best models to meet this trend. The New Balance 2002 was immediately produced in Asia, which minimized its selling price and appealed to buyers. Thanks to New Balance's high-quality standards, however, the workmanship did not suffer and the model was perfect value for money. The model immediately became a bestseller and the New Balance 2002 "Protection Pack", with its unique upper design, was the latest model to be seen everywhere. In 2020, various collaborations were added, which led to further success for the NB 2002: New Balance x Salehe Bembury or New Balance x thisisneverthat. But New Balance also knew how to impress again and again with the general releases of the 2002 R model. The Protection Pack was continued as "Refined Future" and the New Balance 2002 was available as a Gore-Tex version or in monochrome colorways. The NB 2002 R is one of the best Y2K sneakers and a true classic.
