The history of Carhartt begins as early as 1889 where overalls were produced with two sewing machines in the attic of the factory in Detroit, Michigan.

The brand grew very quickly and built factories and sewing shops in other American cities, specializing in the production of workwear, such as the Carhartt dungarees. The company was very proud of its American heritage and supported the military in the production of clothing during World War 1. After surviving the stock market crash and the end of WW2, the company focused on its core business. Large orders were landed and the high quality of Carhartt work pants and jackets guaranteed further success. In the 1970s and 1980s, Carhartt became more popular outside the workforce. Big names in the hip-hop scene began wearing the brand's clothing and interest spilled across the pond to Europe, leading to the creation of Carhartt WIP in 1989.

100 years after the founding of Carhartt, the sub-label Carhartt WIP was created. The WIP stands for "Work in Progress", which means that they are always developing themselves and their products. The characteristics of Carhartt products were adapted and modified for a new target group, workwear became streetwear. The Carhartt fanny pack was now just as in demand as the beanie with the legendary C logo on it. Subcultures from hip-hop to skateboarding took a liking to the refined design and appreciated the quality of Carhartt. Collaborations with labels such as A.P.C., Vans or Neighborhood underline the ambition of Carhartt WIP to reinvent itself again and again.
