With the visible Air cushioning, Nike revolutionized both the design and functionality of sports shoes. The idea of integrating air cushioning into shoe soles was first realized in 1979 with the Nike Tailwind. But it was not until 1987 that designer Tinker Hatfield made this technology visible. Inspired by the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, a building with an exposed interior structure, he designed the Nike Air Max 1 - the first shoe with visible Air cushioning in the heel. This design not only improved comfort but also set new standards in sneaker design and had a lasting influence on it. Over the years, Nike continued to develop Air Max technology. By experimenting with new materials and constructions, both comfort and performance were improved. Despite numerous innovations, the visible Air cushioning remained the unmistakable trademark of the series and was continued in numerous models. The annual AIR MAX DAY dates back to the first release and is therefore celebrated on March 26. Since its launch in 2014, Nike has used this special day to introduce both legendary classics and new, innovative Air Max models. The entire month of March is now celebrated as AIR MAX MONTH and Nike's focus during this time is entirely on the Air Max series. The most famous models from this series are: Air Max 1, Air Max 90, Air Max 95, Air Max Plus, Air Max SNDR, Air Max DN8 and Air Max 180.
